Radio Freethinker is broadcast live on CiTR 101.9 FM from UBC in Vancouver, Canada.  We are also syndicated on UMFM 101.5 FM Winnipeg, CFBX 92.5 FM Kamloops and CXKU 88.3 FM Lethbridge. We promote skepticism, science, critical thinking, and civil liberties.

How the Show came to be and Why the Show exists:

Radio Freethinker began as a concept in September of 2008. The UBC Freethinker club, (UBC’s skeptical campus club) had been approached by CiTR (along with other UBC clubs) to do some promotion over the radio. We at the club thought this was a great idea, but what form would that promotion take?

Fast forward a few months when the then UBC Freethinkers president Elan Dubrofsky, and then executive member Ethan Clow, decided to get the ball rolling by asking for volunteers to come forward with ideas.

There was no short supply of suggestions and sooner or later the idea of a radio show/podcast came up. Everyone involved like the idea and baring some debate on the format, the show was born.

Overwhelmed by the work necessary for the show, Elan and Ethan were very glad when others came forward to do most of the work (ahem) I mean help with some of the work. From those initial meetings three people stood out. Rob Teszka, Don McLenaghen, and Daniel Gipps. The show had its cast and crew.

All that was left to do was come up a format and record our pilot episode. That took about three months. After much debate over music, ideas, segments, structure, speaking order, topics…we realized that our main goal (promoting skepticism and critical thinking) was the only structure we needed.

That became our guiding principle. There is no massive complex battle plan for the show. Simply all of us talking, discussing, and debating issues from a skeptical point of view. Our goal to promote skepticism, critical thinking, science education, reason and ration hasn’t changed nor will it.

We sincerely hope our show will help people become better at employing the skeptical tools and skill set we advocate. And at the same time, be entertained, educated, and empowered.
