BCHA: The Issue with Induction: Why Science is fundamentally Unreasonable, but still Practical
BCHA board member Mclean Edwards will be presenting “The Issue with Induction: Why Science is fundamentally Unreasonable, but still Practical.”
We are all aware of the strength and utility of science, but did you know that fundamentally, there is no reason why science should work at all? I’ll outline this issue, known in philosophy as David Hume’s “Problem of Induction”, and provide a way of looking at the problem that both makes the issue obvious and reveals why empiricism is still the best way to proceed. The talk will be informal and there will be a hands-on demonstration, plenty of diagrams, and simple (but deep) explanations of philosophy and science.
All are welcome to attend. After about half an hour of coffee, tea, and socializing, we discuss topics of interest to our members.
