Climate Reality Project
Starting on Wednesday, Gore will launch the “24 hours of reality” as part of the Climate Reality Project. It will expound on climate change for 24 hours straight. The organization will also commandeer the social media accounts of willing participants throughout the event making it a truly global media event to address a global theat.
“The presentations will feature “200 new slides arguing the connection between more extreme weather and climate change,” Will these change climate deniers minds? Probably not but it may help refresh the sane majorty of the reality of climate change and the dangers it has and will cause.

Quantified Self and the N=1 movement
This is a little off-beat for me as usually I like to go for larger sample sizes than one. This, however, is sort of an interesting website called quantified self exploring various people’s attempts at self-experimentation and their results. I leave it all open for exploration and skeptical interpretation.

Friday Illusion: Shifty shadow alters an object’s path

New Scientist TV has this cool illusion. The video shows a ‘ball’ (actually just a round image) traveling across a grid plan. The motion of the ball remains constant but there is the addition of a shadow beneath the ball. This shadow is manipulated to give the perception that the path of the ball is not constant…although it is.

We heard about the Neurobiology of magic, but I have a book about the magic of neurobiology. I’ve been reading “An anthropologist on Mars” by Oliver Sacks who is an amazingly insightful neurobiologist. This book is a collection of some case studies and explores some of the amazing things our brains do to make things okay.

Book: The Brain that Changes Itself by Norman Doidge

This isn’t so much a skeptic highlight, as a “interesting thought provoking science highlight,” and this may become a theme with me. In any case, I love this book as a compilation of studies breaking down the common misconception that our brain’s structure and capabilities are fairly static as adults. Quick warning: if you’re huge on animal rights this book might not be for you, sometimes to make an omellette you have to stitch a few monkeys….

Paul – movie staring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Seth Rogan.  The plot of the movie is that two british nerds come to America to attend comic con and then take an RV to famous UFO sites like Roswell, along the way they pick up a real alien. Surprisingly, the themes of this movie involve a lot of skepticism, not just about aliens but also religion – including a great scene on creationism vs evolution. More info here.
